Hiii.. friends welcome again.
In this video I have explained about spur gear terminology.
The important definitions related to spur gear are as follows:
a) PITCH CIRCLE: it is an imaginary circle on gear, by which pure rolling action would transfer the same motion and power as the actual gear. It is the basis of measurement for other parameters of gear.
b) ADDENDUM CIRCLE: it is the circle drawn through the top of the teeth which is concentric to the pitch circle.

c) DEDENDUM CIRCLE: it is the circle drawn through the bottom of the teeth. It is also called as root circle.
d) PITCH CIRCLE DIAMETER (D): it is the diameter of pitch circle. The size of the gear is usually specified by the pitch circle diameter.

e) MODULE (m): it is the ratio of the pitch circle diameter to the number o f teeth on gear.
f) CIRCULAR PITCH (Pc): it is the circular distance measured along the circumference of pitch circle from a point of one tooth to the corresponding point on adjacent tooth.

g) DIAMETER PITCH (Pd) : it is the ratio of number of teeth to the pitch circle diameter.
h) ADDENDUM: it is the radial distance of tooth from the pitch circle to the top of the tooth. Its standard value is one module.
i) DEDENDUM: it is the radial distance of tooth from the pitch circle to the bottom of the tooth. Its standard value is 1.15.
j) CLEARANCE : it is the radial distance between the top of the tooth of one gear to bottom of the tooth of another mating gear. Its standard value is 0.157.

k) TOTAL DEPTH: it is the radial distance between the top of the tooth to bottom of the tooth. it is equal to the sum of the addendum and dedendum of a gear.

l) WORKING DEPTH: it is the radial distance from addendum circle to the clearance circle. It is equal to the addendum of two mating gears.

m) TOOTH THICKNESS: it is the width of the teeth measured along pitch circle.

n) TOOTH SPACE: it is the space between two adjacent tooth measured along the pitch circle.

o) BACKLASH: it is the distance between tooth space and tooth thickness measured along the pitch circle.

p) FACE OF TOOTH: it is the surface of the gear above pitch circle.

q) FLANK OF TOOTH: it is the surface of the gear below pitch circle.

r) TOP LAND: it is the surface at the top of the tooth

Measurement over Pins (aka Measurement over Wires)

After you make a gear (EVEN, ODD or PRIME Tooth Count) regardless of your method (Mill,Router, 3D print etc), you will want to check the if the Pitch Line is in the correct location insuring a good mesh. Measurement over Pins is robust requires inexpensive … https://bit.ly/3opQyWB
and common tooling.
Profile Shift Coefficient (PSC) is included for the more advanced users.
but let’s keep it simple leave it blank/zero. Threads are also measured with pins but since the are usually much smaller in diameter they are called \”Wires\”. You may also see \”Measurement over Wires\” where 2 and even 3 wires are used to measure threads.
If you need to measure gears, you may also be working on equipment that uses change gears. We’ve reduced the mathematical complications of change gear selection to a simple calculator: https://bit.ly/3BJXHs9

You may ask these questions;
But is it a standard gear with a standard diameter?  (Use our Calculator and find out)
How can I accurately measure the pitch diameter of my gear?  (Use our Calculator)
How does Backlash factor into all of this? (relates to Profile Shift Coefficient)
If it is not a standard gear, what is it called? (Corrected Gear)
What is the pitch diameter of my gear? (Use the calculator at https://bit.ly/2Ld6eOH)
What is the difference between Pitch and Module? They are different systems to measure the same thing, check out this article for more details http://bit.ly/2MZK7vS
What the heck is Profile Shift Coefficient(PSC)? aka Addendum Modification
This manufacturing process for hobbinhg carries no extra cost and is chosen for many reasons;
1Backlash
2Center Distance
3Contact Ratio(CR) can be altered with the PSC, and higher CR’s lead to quieter gear trains.
4Not usually done on small tooth count Pinions, but can be done on the meshing gear to compensate
5Avoid undercutting

For your Job Shop
Reverse engineer the broken smoldering gear your customer just brought into your job shop.  Use the MOP calculator along with your caliper and pins to measure it, and make sure your new one is going to work in your customers equipment the first time.  You just won a happy customer.
To Design New
Design gears to understand the geometry of a new transmission.  There are many more elements to a gearbox but this will help you understand if it is a matchbox, mailbox or a bus.
For Learning
Gears appear very simple on first blush.  You can use the calculator to understand the primary gear parameters and how they relate. Also the numbers are on they money.
Backlash \u0026 Profile Shift Coefficient
Ahhh!  If all gears were built exactly to spec they might not work and bind without some sort of backlash. This is the area where designers and manufacturers keep their secrets. Just a few modifications and your gears will run smoother, be in spec and they might even be quieter.
14.5 vs 20 degree Pressure Angle
Way before computers and maybe even electricity, it was \”determined\” that the optimal pressure angle was 14.5 degrees. Many of the older machine tools you may have in your shop, like an older lathe or mill, likely has 14.5 degree pressure angle gears. It was an early standard that allowed for interchangeable parts. The newer \”standard\” for many power transmission gearboxes is 20 degrees and there is science behind it.
AGMA
American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) sets the standards for gears. The equations and solutions used in our calculator conform to ANSI/AGMA 2002D19 published in December 2019(the latest). The gear world is super important, yet it is a very small club at the same time. Since so much is at stake with certain types of gears they can only be manufactured by a few OEM’s. Cranes, Planes, Rockets, \u0026 Cars come to mind.

The history of gears is surprisingly interesting the process of milling and hobbing gears plus the transmission of torque and movement all find a place here. We will open the \”Secret Gear Case\” to YT as well through this channel a personal mission.
