There are many reasons to explore fingerstyle technique on the guitar. Fingerstyle is a useful skill to have when accompanying another player (like writing moving melodies over someone else’s open chords), or during a solo acoustic guitar performance. To get you started, we’ll be going over 8 important fingerpicking patterns everyone should know.

In this lesson, you’ll learn essential techniques like rolling and alternating bass patterns. You’ll recognize these in many other patterns you’ll learn in the future, so it’s important to nail them down early.

Don’t feel like you need to memorize all of the patterns we go over here. Grab a few that you think you’ll use, and add them to your daily practice routine. As you master those patterns, feel free to come back to this lesson and add a couple more to your repertoire.

  1. Tommy Emmanuel’s implementation and methods of Chet Atkins and Merle Travis style picking is what inspired me to finger style

  2. I just started learning to play the guitar but fingerstyle or fingerpicking is one thing i want to learn early on. I feel it will help me get a better feeling of the guitar and train myself some muscle memory

  3. I started with your channel when I first learned electric 4 years ago. I recently picked up finger style and here I am again. Great teacher and great video!

  4. Right now, I’m working on Mr. Tambourine Man. Using thumb and index finger. Hit the root of the chord then the 5th, then strum with the index finger the rest of the chord.

  5. Many, many years ago my guitar teacher taught me Dust in the Wind. It's the only pattern I know, but I can play it perfectly even if I haven't done it for a decade. Once it's in your brain it's there forever.

  6. First time I picked up the guitar (feb 2020) I decided to learn a basic finger picking song. Today (Jan 2021) was the first time I used more than my index finger for it. Through out today I've been relearning the few finger picking songs I know and applying a real picking pattern to them.
After the first hurdle they already sound so much better, I wish I'd been playing like this for the last 11 months as I could have been so much better today.
