Mozart’s piano sonatas date from 1773 until 1788 – a period in which his style matured at a truly remarkable rate. The earliest sonatas are very much in the galant style of W.F and CPE Bach, and in places Scarlatti’s influence can be detected. However, the late sonatas, such as K457 are full of surprises, and here the influence of Haydn is to the fore – even predicting Beethoven in passages. The years from 1773 to the late 80s saw the rapid development of the piano from a novelty and experimental instrument, to the stage where it’s power and range provided composers with a hitherto undreamed palate of colours and expression. Mozart exploited the new instruments to maximum effect in his concertos and his sonatas.

Winter Sonata (a.k.a. Winter Ballad/Winter Love Story, Korean: 겨울연가) was the second part of the KBS TV drama series Endless Love. This installment was produced in March 2002 in South Korea. It was broadcast on Japan’s NHK and has been a major part of the Korean wave both there and throughout Asia. It is known as 冬のソナタ (Fuyu no sonata) in Japanese, 冬日戀歌 (Dōngrì Liàn’gē) or 冬季戀歌 (Dōngjì Liàn’gē) in Mandarin Chinese, and Bản tình ca mùa Đông in Vietnamese.\r

The story begins when Junsang, who is the son of an eminent musician, moves to Chuncheon, a rural city in South Korea. As an extraordinarily talented student, Junsang is welcomed by his fellow students as well as teachers, but remains a quiet, introverted young man. As a result of his belief that his father is dead and serious conflicts with his mother, Junsang believes that no one truly loves him.\r

On one fortuitous day on the ride to school, Junsang’s classmate Yujin interrupts him on the bus. Junsang soon falls in love with Yujin, who opens herself to him with an innocent heart. Their love, however, is cut short after Junsang is involved in a serious autoaccident and, due to brain damage, is unable to recall his past life.\r

Ten years later, Junsang is an awardwinning architect in the United States. He does not remember anything about his life in Korea. He is completely different, an openminded person who cares about other people, including his mother. He returns to Korea and Yujin sees him on the street, prompting her to put off her engagement to childhood friend Sanghyuk. Little does she know that Minhyung is dating her friend and sometime rival Chelin. The story’s plot intensifies when Yujin begins work at the firm where Minhyung is employed, and tries to find out if he is her lost lover Junsang.\r
