We didn’t implement an appropriate snubber on our pushpull converter because leakage inductance of our transformer was not considered correctly.

We all know you have to take the specifications of some components (including relays) sourced from the Far East with a pinch of salt sometimes. My 10 Amp mains relay seems to be somewhat underspecified.
Not only that, the spark from the relay every time I switch my power off could rival some firework displays. This I had to sort out with the standard RC (resistor/capacitor) \”snubber\” circuit I found a decent set from China but was it any good?
So I had to replace a relay, add a snubber circuit and learn a painful lesson that even small \”toy\” kits from China can have a bit of a sting in their tails. Ouch. And don’t laugh, it hurt!
So my eventual solution was fairly straightforward, but there is a better way, which I mention at the end of the video something for a future project, perhaps, now that the price of the magic component is low enough.

Taramps are one of the brands I have the most respect for in the 12v audio industry. Not only are they pursuing the hard and expensive task of developing their own bespoke amplifier circuits from scratch, something that you do not see from almost all of the brands that get nuthugged on the forums, but their customer service and contactability are impeccable. When i was first starting to learn amplifier repair, I came across a Taramps HD10k that needed a replacement control chip. Since these are programmed by Taramps in brazil I could not source this elsewhere. I didnt hold out much hope, but on a whim I reached out to them, as a complete nobody and stranger to them, asking if it would be possible to PURCHASE a replacement chip and how much shipping to the UK would be. They replied quickly and asked for my address. The next thing I know, I have received not one, but TWO replacement chips, along with a full kit of mosfets, gate resistors drivers and diodes COMPLETELY free of charge! No questions asked, just here you go, here are the parts to get our amp up and running again like new, at our expense. Unbelievable, and a stark contrast to the experiences I have had with other audio companies even as an authorized dealer. I know that this attitude to customer services extends to warranty and returns, with Taramps being extremely generous and relaxed if you ever encounter a problem with their equipment irregardless of where you bought it from or how you had it wired up.

How to Design Snubber Circuit for Power Electronics Protection and Applications

Snubbers are frequently used in electrical systems with an inductive load where the sudden interruption of current flow leads to a sharp rise in voltage across the current switching device (\”inductive kick\”), in accordance with Faraday’s law. This transient can be a source of electromagnetic interference (EMI) in other circuits. Additionally, if the voltage generated across the device is beyond what the device is intended to tolerate, it may damage or destroy it. The snubber provides a shortterm alternative current path around the current switching device so that the inductive element may be discharged more safely and quietly. Inductive elements are often unintentional, but arise from the current loops implied by physical circuitry. While current switching is everywhere, snubbers will generally only be required where a major current path is switched, such as in power supplies. Snubbers are also often used to prevent arcing across the contacts of relays and switches and the electrical interference and welding or sticking of the contacts that can occur (see also arc suppression).
