This week we’re continuing our look at the shape of the A Major triad. This is the shape we’re gonna use to play our E Major, A Major and B Major on the top three strings. We’re only going to focus on playing on the top three strings, strings 1-3 right now, to develop callouses and flexibility before we gradually add more strings. And we’re only going to play in the key of E Major right now, so we can focus on how the three major chords in any given key work together. E Major is the most common key that songs for guitar are written in. And in this key, the chords of E Major, A Major and B Major are the most important chords to know, in fact, most of popular music uses just these three chords (in our case, when playing in the key of E Major). We can also move this shape all the way up to the 12th fret, the fret with the two dots, and play an E Major an octave higher. Let’s focus on playing this chord cleanly, using our middle finger to mute the fourth, or D string, and focusing our attack on just the top three strings. We’re gonna learn a few different ways to play these three chords, or triads, on just the top three strings, that are pretty easy chords for beginners to play, and they sound really bright and are perfect to break out when someone else is playing a more bass-heavy or fuller low-end sound. They’re very popular chords for guitarists and you’ll hear them in a lot of songs.
