The Crunch

Link to Build Plan

At first, the goal of this build was to create the best grappler possible. I realized quickly that a grappler will have a very hard time keeping up with the damage and defenses of other classes, so I figured I’d find a new way to be useful. As I grappler, I could tie up one creature almost indefinitely, but not do much else. Then I realized, why not tie them up literally?

So, I started looking for the best ways to tie people up. This led me to the Cavalier Order of the Penitent and the first main feature ability of this build, Expert Captor. This allows me to skip the penalty for typing up a creature while grappling instead of pinned. This means that I only need to make 2 grapple checks to tie them up.

Next I was looking for a way to get the Grab ability. This allows me to initiate grapples when I hit with an attack, and nets me a delicious +4 bonus to grapples. Unfortunately, the only way I saw to do this was with a high level Rage Power or with the feat Final Embrace, which requires me to have constrict. That led to to the witch archetype White-Haired Witch and the second key ability: White Hair. This has an attack similar to grab, but not quite the same.

Then I realized, both Grab and the White Hair ability trigger off the same action. I could attack with the hair, initiate a grapple with the Grab special ability, then make the second grapple check with the White Hair ability. The ability doesn’t specify what kind of grapple check it makes, only that you get to make a grapple check, so it would stand to reason that you could have any type (to pin, reposition, etc.). This gives me the ability to tie up a person with a single attack roll and two grapple checks.

The DC to escape ropes is equal to 20 + CMB. This makes escape pretty much entirely impossible. Their only option to escape is with a strength check. The DCs for Hemp, Silk, and Spider Silk rope are 23, 24, and 25, requiring a Strength score of 16, 18, and 20 respectively to break the bonds on a natural 20. At 10GP a pop, I’d probably stock up on Silk with a few lengths of Spider Silk lying around for exceptionally strong creatures. I also keep a Heavy Pick on standby for when I need to coup-de-grace a creature. With a minimum damage of 24 requiring a DC 34 fort save to not die…it’s gonna die.

Everything else in the build is meant to increase grappling capabilities. The first four levels are crucial, but level 5 and beyond are completely flexible (except for Final Embrace).

I am open to any and all suggestions for how to flesh out the character or make improvements. Please keep in mind that this is a Pathfinder Society Character and is subject to Pathfinder Society rules. If you aren’t sure if something is Pathfinder Society legal, you can check Archives of Nethys.

The Character

I don’t know when or how or why it clicked, but when it did I realized that I had created Bobobo! From his overbearing personality, recklessness, enormous muscles, and prehensile nose hairs this is precisely the character in question. Of course, I’m going to make him his own character for my actual game, but the resemblance is just uncanny. This is who I base his personality on.

Nokrem “Man Catcher” is a bounty hunter. His specialty is in live captures of particularly difficult targets. He hunts with his two birds, Huah-may and Muah-nay, and has a crab familiar named Chemsherrokaknis (Chem for short) that lives in a large brass flask he keeps at his side and fills with magic. He has lightly browned skin, gold tattoos, and long, strawberry blond hair. Due to his supernatural control of it, he deliberately moves it as if it were being blown by a light breeze at all times. Even indoors or during rainstorms. While preparing his spells for the day, Nokrem makes sure to take very gentle care of his hair. Much of the gold he earns is spent on expensive and exotic shampoos and scents.

As part of his pact with the crab that granted him his supernatural powers, Nokrem tries to get his captives to talk. Not necessarily about why they are being captured or who wants them dead, but he wants to hear their stories. Chem always listens intently while Nokrem writes them down. Nokrem suspects there is something sinister about the crab’s urgings to hear their stories, but he goes along with it anyways.

Nokrem is and always has been a ladies man. He capitalizes on his pseudo-celebrity status and impressive physique to woo women. However, his overly boisterous attitude often scares away the more timid suitors leaving only those who can match his enthusiasm in his close company. For that reason, he find friends among the Pathfinder society and currently carries out mission for them.

The Backstory

Nokrem spent his youth among his clansmen of the Shriikirri-Quah (Hawk Clan) of the Shoanti people in northern Varisia. It was there that he was trained to hunt with his two hawks, Huah-may and Muah-nay. Nokrem was different from the other Shoanti people. While they kept their hair cropped close to the head, Nokrem preferred to keep his beautiful blond hair long and flowing. His choice not to cut it short earned him the disdain of his tribesmen, but also earned him the adoration of the women of other tribes and big cities, if only for the novelty of seeing a Shoanti with waist-length strawberry blond hair.

At the age of 17, Nokrem made a decision that would kickstart his adventuring career in a way he could have never expected. Growing tired of the jeers and ostracism, he left his tribe to wander Varisia as a bounty hunter. During one hunt for a particularly slippery sorcerer, Nokrem found himself in a strangely damp cave in the middle of the Cinderlands taking shelter from a wild firestorm. It was there he met Chemsherrokaknis, a rather intelligent crab imprisoned there by superstitious barbarians in the region. While waiting out the storm, he spoke to the crab at length about his life and his love of his own hair that caused his exile.

When at last the storm died down and he was ready to leave the cave, Chem spoke. He recognized the extreme vanity in Nokrem, but also his great potential. From then on, Nokrem took Chem with him and learned the strange and wild magic that seemed to flow from this ordinary looking crab. The only caveat is that Nokrem was bound to read and learn as much about the lives of those he captured. For some strange reason that he has yet to divine, Chem ceaselessly prods Nokrem to speak to the captives and write down their stories, and froths violently at the mouth when entering a library.
