Valmet Sulfuric Acid Plant – enabling circular economy at pulp mills
Today’s trend is renewable – reusable recyclable. Consumers prefer woodbased products and the choice of the modern world is lignocellulose. Global demand for pulp will increase. Regardless of the endproduct, we must produce pulp responsibly.
We are continuously working towards a circular economy. Pulp producers aim for constantly lower emissions, with all side streams harnessed and made use of.
Valmet’s innovation makes it possible to recycle and reuse chemicals in pulp production. Valmet Sulfuric Acid Plant is an excellent example of Valmet enabling circular economy in pulp production. It turns odorous side streams into highquality acid – making the most out of a pulp mill’s chemical circulation.
The very first plant was built for Metsä Group’s Äänekoski Bioproduct mill in 2016. Valmet’s team developed the solution to meet and tackle the customer’s emission challenge – all within the normal project schedule.
The Sulfuric Acid Plant is independent, complementary and does not interfere with the mill’s other processes.
With the Sulfuric Acid Plant, Metsä Group’s Bioproduct mill has been able to drastically decrease emissions and cut costs at the same time. The plant reduces emissions to both soil and water and eliminates carbon emissions from the transportation of externally purchased acid. Inhouse production enhances the mill’s chemical balance in an environmentally friendly way, reducing the need for makeup chemicals. In any pulp mill, potential savings can reach up to 7,5 euros/ADT – or hundreds of truckloads of acid per year.
When producing pulp, resource efficiency is crucial. Take a step towards more responsible pulp production with Valmet Sulfuric Acid Plant.

Part of the industrial process used to convert wood chips into pulp for use in paper and other cellulosic products, is the kraft pulping process. During the pulping process the wood components are released from the wood or converted into the useful byproducts of methanol, turpentine, and tall oil. This module describes where the byproducts come from, how they are recovered, and the equipment used to recover them.
