Trichomes: Cannabis Plant Basics


If you’re a horticulturist, then you’re already familiar with what glandular trichomes (GT’s) are and how they work to protect plants. But for the rest of us, it’s a mysterious and complex science.
All flowering plants have thousands of tiny hairs that appear to be crystalized dots covering the surface area. Some people mistake trichomes for terpenes, but terpenes are manufactured in the secretory cells inside glandular trichomes. Somewhere along the way, people dropped the ‘glandular’ part of the name and referred to them as trichomes. Let’s look closer at what they’re all about.
What Are Glandular Trichomes?
GT’s exist in all flowering plants. They’re microscopic adaptive structures known as \”phytochemical factories\” due to their remarkable ability to biosynthesize. They can be challenging to spot since they’re so small, but these little powerhouses produce a powerful punch. By producing different organic chemical compounds based on what the plant requires, glandular trichomes are the security system/immune system rolled into one.
What Do Trichomes Create?
The trichomes’ job is to produce and secrete various active, organic compounds typically formed by hydrocarbon fusion, five carbon atoms, or isoprene. These sticky and sometimes smelly compounds can be terpenes, cannabinoids, and or flavonoids. Chemically diverse, most function as defense elements and are often regarded as \”the first defense line\” of plants against biotic and abiotic stresses.
Each of the organic compounds produced by the glandular trichome impacts the final cannabis product.
Cannabinoids likely the most wellknown of the organic compounds Trichomes biosynthesize, cannabinoids are responsible for protecting plants from harmful UV light. They are known for having insecticidal and herbicidal properties. Still, most people know cannabinoids like THC (the chemical that makes you high) or CBD (the compound that may contain medicinal properties.
Flavonoids Cannabis flavonoids are a common group of phytonutrients responsible for the nongreen color pigments in cannabis and hemp plants. Flavonoids also protect plants from different biotic and abiotic stresses and act as unique UV filters. Flavonoids play a role in frost hardiness, drought resistance and may play a functional role in heat acclimation and freezing tolerance.
Terpenes Terpenes are a large, diverse class of organic hydrocarbon compounds that may protect plants by discouraging herbivores from snacking on delicate leaves. Like cannabinoids and flavonoids, it’s also believed that terpenes protect the plant from UV spectrum lights. For more on how UV lights impact cannabis plants, check out this blog here.
These highly aromatic compounds determine the flavor and smell of cannabis.
Final Thoughts
Cannabis is an incredible plant with many different medicinal uses. One of the main reasons for the plant’s diversity is the fact that there are over 500 different chemicals identified in cannabis. More than 100 of these chemicals are cannabinoids—compounds that are unique to medicinal cannabis. So whether you call them trichomes or glandular trichomes, it’s pretty clear that these miniature ‘hairs’ are an indispensable aspect of keeping plants thriving and healthy.

My this video is about Trichomes. In this video I have tried to explain the different types, function and importance of trichomes. From this lecture you can easily collect material for your Plant anatomy paper.
Trichomes
Hair like structure or appendages or out growths that were originated from the epidermis of the plants.
The word trichome is originated from the Greek Word which mean Hair.
Trichomes may be Unicellular, Multicellular or branched or they may be of stellate type or star shaped.
Trichome may have glandular tips or they may be without glandular tips.
Trichome are of different types
1) Hair Like
2) Papilla like
3) Glandular
4) Scale Like
Glandular like stomata are present in tomato plant where they help to protect the plant from the attack of insects.
In Sundew Plant the stomata secret certain kinds of secretion that help to capture the insects and help in their digestions.
Scale like trichomes are present in Olive tree.
Trichomes also shade the leaves of those plants that are native to hot climates; here in these plants they help to lower the rate of evaporation and maintain the moisture content in plants.
They also give certain kind of fragrance and taste to plants due to the presence of certain kind of secondary compounds present in it. for example in mint plant.
In Tradescantia flower 10 to 30 groups of long trichomes are present in the trichomes that are connected end to end.

If you’re out on a hike and look down at a puddle, you might spot a long, brown spaghettishaped creature whipping around madly in a figure 8.
It’s a hairworm – also known as a horsehair worm or Gordian worm – and researchers have described 350 species around the world. Good news: It isn’t interested in infecting or attacking humans. But if you had happened on the puddle a few hours earlier, you might have witnessed a gruesome spectacle – the hairworm wriggling out of a cricket’s body, pushing its way out like the baby monster in the movie “Alien.”
How a hairworm ends up in a puddle, or another water source such as a stream, hot tub or a pet’s water dish, is a complex story. A young hairworm finds its way into a cricket or similar insect like a beetle or grasshopper, and once it’s grown into an adult, the parasite takes over its host’s brain to hitch a ride to the water.
As a result of the infection, crickets stop growing and reproducing. Male crickets infected by hairworms even lose their chirp, said Ben Hanelt, a biologist at the University of New Mexico who studies hairworms.
What is a hair worm?
A hair worm or hairworm – pick your spelling – is a nematomorph. Nematomorpha are a group of parasites. They’re long, thin worms that can grow to be several meters long inside their host.
Can humans be infected by hair worms?
There are reports of humans and cats and dogs being infected by hair worms, but hair worms aren’t after us or our pets because they can’t grow inside us, said Hanelt. They can only grow inside a host like a cricket or a related insect.
“What happens is that a dog, a cat, a human will ingest an adult (hair worm) somehow,” said Hanelt. “Could a cricket crawl in your sandwich before you take a bite? I don’t know. None of the studies that are out there talk about that. What they have been reported to do is to cause in many people intestinal distress.”
How do hair worms control crickets’ minds?
Scientists don’t understand the precise mechanism yet, but they believe that hairworms either boost chemicals in the crickets’ brains or pump chemicals into their brains.
