12-string Guitar: Mairzy Doats (Including lyrics and chords) and information related to this topic.

For no apparent reason, this song came into my head yesterday and so I looked it up to discover that there are more verses available than the one I grew up with. It is a song that became popular in the early 1940’s just before I was born and although the popular version written by Milton Drake; Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston was the one I learned in my early years, the song was their take on an old nursery rhyme.. I include some other verses here as well as their version.

Mairzy Doats
Milton Drake; Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston
No capo

G
I know a ditty nutty as a fruitcake goofy as a goon and silly as a loon
Some call it pretty, others call it crazy, but they all sing this tune:

C
Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
G C G
A kiddley divey do, wooden shoe?
C
Yes! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
G C
A kiddley divey do, wooden shoe?

G
If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey
Sing “Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy”

C
Oh! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
G C G
A kiddley divey do, wooden shoe -oo?
C G C G C
A kiddley divey do, wooden shoe?

Whailzy deals and sealzy deals and baby fishy doysters,
A squiddley doysters do, wooden shoe?
Yes whailzy deals and sealzy deals and baby fishy doysters,
A squiddley doysters do, wooden shoe?

Well if the words sound queer, and funny to your ear,
All of you girlsters and boysters,
Say, ” Whales eat eels and seals eat eels,
And baby fish eat oysters!”

Whales eat eels and seals eat eels and baby fish eat oysters,
A squid will eat oysters too, wouldn’t you?
A whale will eat oysters too, a squid will eat oysters too,
A kid will eat ivy too, wouldn’t you?

Cowzy day and goatzy day and little pigzy donuts;
A kiddely donuts, do, wooden shoe?
(Repeat)
Now if the words sound queer, and funny to your ear, you think you’re gonna go nuts,
Say “Cows eat hay, and goats eat hay, and little pigs eat donuts.”
Cowzy day and goatzy day and little pigzy donuts;
A kiddely donuts, do, wooden shoe?
A kiddely donuts, do, wooden shoe?

  1. Just wanted to thank you. My darling deceased father used to always sing this. 26 years after saying goodbye to him forever I finally know and understand the lyrics thanks to you. You were great!! X

  2. GREAT! However, if you can manage some mixing, you might want to try dropping the gain on the guitar and/or bringing up the mike on you (or putting a mike on you?). Methinks you're getting some reverb from the room too, so a more directional mike setup might also drastically improve the production values.

  3. My grandma sang this to my dad when he was young. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! My kids are going to learn to play it and sing it for him for Christmas.

  4. Thank you for posting! Enjoyed revisiting my childhood with my grandbaby! As we listened to this man sing, my grandson bounced on my exercise ball throughout the whole song! So cute! We enjoyed listening and I posted this video to my facebook! Thanks again!

  5. Great. I'm going to try a New Orleans bluesy, low slide guitar,, gruffly voice, version sung by two ole wino's, sitting on a porch, eating oats for breakfast, pontificating what else eats oats,  and  watching a snot-nose kid eat ivy on the street curb.
