  1. The 2nd Best for me is GMC I & Ii..the 1st Best thing for ne is Smoke Gets in your Ears by Barry Harris…JS Bach in.Jazz…Wow I have to Cry each time….I am going to pray Once I will turn in to a Harmony Nerd….

  2. The thing I like about your videos Mikko is your example songs – I go away and learn them too – which reinforces the best advice I was ever given: “Learn Songs” 👏👏👏

  3. Great explanation of these concepts Mikko. It's giving me a better understanding of these ideas, which I haven't really grasped up to now. Will watch this in a few chunks

  4. I’m so glad you’re getting into Barry’s stuff. I’ve already watched this twice. A video on ”playing with your brothers and sisters” would be an interesting follow up to this.

  5. This is a rather long response post, so I hope folks don't mind. Partly a trove of links and recommendations, partly commentary on the topic… from a fellow MI/GIT alum 😉

About the Alan Kingstone book. It's definitely NOT out of print!
You can get the book (with or without CD) here: https://jazzworkshops.com/book-store/
As you note, it's well worth it!

I'd had Alan's book for a long time, but I didn't quite "get it," just looking at the book.
As such, your recommendation for @ThingsILearnedFromBarryHarris (Chris Parks) is a solid one.

The underlying "why?" wasn't clear to me… then I discovered Chris and it all started coming together!

For those that are intrigued with Barry's approach upon seeing this, I highly encourage picking up the two sets of DVD lessons.
He lays out all of the important points and why/how he thinks of things the way he does.

Anyone who studies his methods seriously will find immense value in both sets of DVDs!

The books and DVDs are not a one-time use! They're worth repeated review and listening.

Some may say "that's too expensive" or opt for just volume 2, but I think that's a *big mistake*.
I've seen some comments along the lines of the second one being preferred, but I don't see it that way.
These are both impactful, incredibly helpful and illustrative of his teaching style.

I am a regular subscriber to Barry's virtual Saturday workshops (huge bargain, BTW — see barryharris.com for more on how to participate).
Because I invested in a good grounding with his methods, I get so much more out of them,

For anyone that enjoys his work, they'd also be smart to check out Thomas on "The Labyrinth of Limitations" ( @The Labyrinth of Limitations — https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKyKOpYORjk89PXAHVQLHg).
His work can be a bit on the dense side (as in packed with goodness), but it's worth taking it all in.

His work on exploring contrary motion ("the elevator") concept is just fascinating.
And the software he's built ("The Tesseract") is even more fascinating!

Dive deep, friends! It's all great stuff 😉

  6. Another great video with approaches and concepts well worth putting time into.
I just moved and got a lot of stuff out of storage and discovered I have a copy of the Barry Harris Guitar book (by Kingstone). I just found it during the move yesterday, so the timing of you putting out this video is perfect. Thanks for always having something to keep me busy at being the eternal student! Take care you big guitar geek!!!🤓 🎸and THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, as usual!!!

  7. Wonderful, thank you 🤟🎸

I am interested in your digression at 21:00 of how a m7b5 could function as tonic in a major key? I understand applied to minor key, but major i don’t quite follow?

  8. Great stuff mikko! Love seeing more Barry Harris concepts like this. I only made it thru 20 mins of this video. But I'll be sure to watch the rest later today. You nailed it when you said something about getting out of the box and moving harmony. Makes for endless new ways to practice.
