Lyrics:
Memories consume, like opening the wound
I’m picking me apart again
You all assume I’m safe here in my room
Unless I try to start again

I don’t want to be the one the battles always choose
‘Cause inside, I realize that I’m the one confused

I don’t know what’s worth fighting for or why I have to scream
I don’t know why I instigate and say what I don’t mean
I don’t know how I got this way, I know it’s not alright
So, I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit tonight

Clutching my cure, I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more than anytime before
I had no options left again

I don’t want to be the one the battles always choose
‘Cause inside, I realize that I’m the one confused

I don’t know what’s worth fighting for or why I have to scream
I don’t know why I instigate and say what I don’t mean
I don’t know how I got this way, I’ll never be alright
So, I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit tonight

I’ll paint it on the walls ’cause I’m the one at fault
I’ll never fight again and this is how it ends

I don’t know what’s worth fighting for or why I have to scream
But now I have some clarity to show you what I mean
I don’t know how I got this way,I’ll never be alright
So, I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit tonight

  1. ive listened to this so many times and its still my favorite linkin park song… just putting this here to say hello to future me

  2. I… grew up with this song. It got me into anime, which in turn inspired me to become the writer I am. But now, after having gone through an extensive alcohol addiction I’m here again, a whole year sober, listening to it for the first time in roughly five years. I’m crying right now because it feels like this is the first time I ever truly felt the full power and weight of everything that this song creates.

To all of you out there suffering.

I don’t know what’s worth fighting for. Or why I had to scream. But now I do have clarity, and know what my life means.

I don’t know how I got this way. I’ll never be alright.

But I broke the habit. And so can you. TONIGHT.

  3. I wish it was easy to just brake the habit but this devil fentenyl isn't just braking the it's braking my entire life in Chester's words I don't know how I got this way I know it's not alright

  4. It's a Linkin Park kind of day for me. So many comments about life and feelings here. Thank you Linkin Park for providing us with our own 'sharing board'. A broken vase is gonna have those marks no matter how you piece it together. We try to recognise it, accept it, know its limitations and try our best to move on. Some days are tougher than most. Thank you Chester, Mike, Rob, Brad, Dave and Joe for all the memories. Take a bow. You deserve it 👏👏👏

  5. This song is one I have such difficulty listening to. As a kid, I would always default to violence upon any pushback. I knew it wasn't normal. And I hated that THAT was my default. I knew I needed to "break that habit". At 17, I was in a psychiatric facility for those outbursts. One of many visits for me since about 13. On the day I was set to leave, a security guard pulled me aside, and said roughly, ~"I pulled your record. You have a history of this. I don't care if you're still 17. You do this again, you're going to jail."

I told those closest to me about this in order for them to help me. Anytime they would see me start to clench my fist, they would say "DO YOU WANT TO GO TO JAIL?" And long story short, I'm a legal adult with no record (other than traffic stuff). And much better now. I know now the song was about a different kind of habit. But … violence was my habit that needed breaking…

For clarification, the outbursts were never towards animals. I teared up bad when I accidentally shut my door on my pups paw lol.

  6. Hello, my name is somebody_33. I am fourteen years old and is currently suffering from depression.
This month has really been tough for me. Depression was kicking in as well as the suicidal ideations sometimes. In one month alone, I was put on two involuntary psychiatric holds (5150) for suicide attempts.
On the second 5150, I could not hold back my feelings at the hospital. I broke down and started hitting my head upon the wall. They had to bring two others to restrain me onto the bed. Ten minutes later, they let me have my phone. I opened up YouTube and started playing this song. My tears quickly disappeared listening to the song. They then transferred me to a mental hospital sixty miles away for psychiatric treatment, and I was discharged six days later.
After the discharge, I have been listening to Linkin Park every day, specifically this song. I use this song to cope with my depression and impulsiveness, and it really helps a lot.
    Thank you, Linkin Park. <3c

  7. I had no idea that the singer from Linkin Park passed away rip so sad it seems like everyone is gone way too soon my mom passed away March 9th 2019 from kidney cancer life's way too short life is so unpredictable you never know

  8. I remember the exact moment I heard about Chester on the radio. I was at work & listening through one of the speakers in the building and as soon as they announced it me and my co-worker who I didn't know was a Linkin Park fan both rushed to the main speaker and stared in horror.
We worked in silence for the rest of the day simply because we didn't know what to say.
Linkin Park has gotten me through very tough times in my life and sadly I relate to everything Chester sings. I don't care what people think of Linkin Park. They have comforted countless souls in pain and I will forever thank God for their talent he gave them.
