"Come As You Are" Guitar Tutorial – Nirvana | Easy Guitar Lesson – Riff, Chords & Strumming and information related to this topic.

Hey! This week we’re going to show you how to play “Come As You Are” by Nirvana. This is one of those tunes that never really wanes in popularity (because it’s SOOO GOOOD!). Maybe it’s because I was also born/raised on the west coast, but there’s some kind of dreary beauty associated with songs like this – really makes me feel a lot better on those gray Vancouver days!

During the lesson I mention our eBook (which is free for all subscribers!) – You can use it to help you build a solid foundation: chords, switching, progressions, riffs, techniques… everything it takes to be a “good guitarist.” You can find it here:

TABLE OF CONTENTS

0:00 – INTRO
1:20 – MAIN RIFF
4:57 – MEMORIIIIIIIAAAAA
8:05 – …CHORDS, STRUMMING & PLAYALONG FOR THAT
9:05 – THE LAST PART
11:10 – THE SOLO
14:51 – FAREWELL!

This is actually a pretty packed lesson: we start off by talking about tuning. This song is actually in “D-Standard” tuning, and I explain how to re-tune your guitar, BUT to keep things simple, we’re going to stay in “E-Standard” tuning (the regular one) so no worries there!

First up is the riff, we go through it a few notes at a time, making sure you’re using the right fingers so you can play it easily and get the right feel. Then we go over the “memoria” part, and then the “well I swear that I don’t have a gun” bit. Finally, we go over the solo, which is one of the easier guitar solos you’ll come across (aside from that “pedal” bend at the end).

All-in-all, this is a very intricate song that can be REALLY simple if you break it down like we show you in the video. I hope you enjoy learning it and hopefully the neighbours don’t complain too much 😀

‘Til next time!
James

  1. What are your favorite Nirvana tunes? I actually surprised myself when I realize I've only taught this one, and Smells Like Teen Spirit. There's SOOO many more good ones. Let me know your favs and I'll try to teach them ASAP!

  2. Ist 6:10 in the morning, I've learned playing guitar for like 12 hours. My fingers hurt so bad, I should go to bed.
The last months I've learned with an application for my smartphone and though it was good. Because the YouTube tutorials I've found in the past weren't good.
BUT. your channel is insane, thank you really much for your time and help! With your tutorials it is so easy to learn guitar and it makes really much fun. Thanks!!!

  3. I think I have an idea of how to play guitar but I'm only learning the basic of course. But when I saw your video I'm asking myself do I need to press near the metal of the neck or has to press on the metal itself when playing a note 1 and 2? Because I think I have to press and near the metal for the notes that are higher on the neck??

  4. I'm struggling on getting the tight placement after the intro but even after I do place it right they are all muted and my guitar is different than yours so it's confusing 😭

  5. You made this shit super easy man. I can almost play the whole song. The way you break things down is perfect. I subbed. Can you do Nirvana- Polly next?

  6. Hey thanks for the lesson man. So I've been struggling with the chord changes from F5 to A mostly because it is a complete change in shape and I can't seem to get the timing right at all. But maybe for beginners when they aren't so familiar to changes in shapes of chords, you could teach them to an alternate way. What I did was I played A5 on the fifth fret, sixth string. You're keeping the same chord shape and moving it down the fret board. I found this to be much more easy than changing to a different shape.

  7. I just saw the headstock so i know the answer. Thank you for the lessons they are helping me brush up fantastically. I started playing when i was 7 and carried on until my early 20's, 22 actually and got quite proficient but then my father passed away and through grief i never picked a Guitar up again for 27 years. I'm finding it easy to refresh, not sure why but i think it's the mere fact i've just caught the bug again and i got looking through his Guitar collection, full of vintage Guitars and it reignited the need for me to start playing again. So thank you.
