  1. this is really great. I hadn't actually thought about diminished sevenths like this; I know they can lead to all sorts of chords, but wasn't really sure how. thank you!

  2. My left ear kinda liked it but my right ear wanted some pop corn… On a more serious… note, for those who know what dim7s are, the real meat of the video starts at: 3:00

  3. 06:15
What do you mean major seventh ?.Your holding C /E/F/A ..

I thought a major seventh was a major triad +M7

If it was C/E/G/B ..the yes = major triad +M7
It can't be an inversion of an C maj 7 , because you still play a double flatted B .

    Verry confused over here

  4. Wow. This really simplified diminished chords for me. I never really knew how to write them into a progression even though they always made sense when reading charts. Really excited to start using these with confidence. Thanks!

  5. Cracking stuff! No better way to learn than to break it down to bare bones…it now all makes sense. Thanks Duane for taking the time to create these tutorials.

  6. I call em Neutral chords like the one gear that lets you easily shift into all other gears, or cog system.
Equidistant or equilateral chords all work as neutral chords and can be factored according to basic multiplication and division such that the four note diminished seventh occurs in three unique positions in the twelve note chromatic scale. 4 note combo occurring 3 times out of the twelve note set. The same as 4×3=12 or 12/4=3 or 12/4=3.
There is also the Augmented chord with similar qualities for being another equilateral or equidistant interval chord. It has three notes only and factors in the same way~ 3×4=12 ~to say there are 4 unique 3note diminished chords in the set of 12 chromatic notes.
I graph chords and scales into circular clocks replacing the twelve numbers with the twelve chromatic notes, it reveals their geometric interval shapes, and i do harmonic stacking of the shapes to further reveal an axial system chords & scales follow. axis & Symmetry

  7. Been two years I'm into piano, i didn't know this I'm a self learner and this seriously helped a lot! You made it simple and fit the actual concept in mind at once and for all! Thank you very much, Regards from India 🙂

  9. This is excellent stuff. I've been a guitar player for 40 years and now I play piano accordion, (not jazz) but I can find nothing like this instruction for the box. Best regards from Scotland.

  10. And also, 7b9 chords are really diminished chords, so you really only need to learn 3 runs comfortably to just have arpeggioes handy, should you need them!

  11. Hi Duane, thankyou for your fantastic videos. I just have a technical question about this one. At 3.00 in the above video you go from a Cdiminished7 chord to B7, to go to E. In describing it you say that you are going from the key of C to the key of E, but there is no Cdiminished7 chord in the key of C. There is one in the key of Db, so would you more likely call this going from the key of Db to E? (though even in Db there is only a Cdim chord, not Cdiminished7, ie. the 7th position in a major scale).

  12. I've still got loads to learn regarding music theory and thus i write mostly by ear at this point, but i noticed how diminished chords can lead to alot of things.
Good to see a video that elaborates on this
