1. Try to transpose the melody to a scale you know well.
2. Try to find your bass notes first.
3. Start with the root note (of the scale).
4. Many progressions start or end with the root note (tonic).
5. After finding a fitting bass progression, build chords on it.
6. A basic chord is built from the 1st, 3rd and 5th scale degree.

I think there's a more simple method to figuring this out.
1. Take the lowest or highest note of the 1st bar
2. Do the same for the remaining (3) bars, but make sure the notes selected are in corresponding selection order
3. Now combine them to form a chord
4. Bring the notes as close as possible to each other making sure all notes are a tone apart.
This was a great demonstration of a practical approach, but i was looking for more of a theoretical explanation of the relationship between melody and chord progression. I don't know if such an explanation even exists, but I'll keep looking!

Thanks for the great video and explanation. This is the very thing I needed as a newbie.
Not super thrilled about the F chord, but that's the beauty of it. There are always so many options, even when you're staying strictly in the key (diatonic). None of these are wrong, but they invoke different feelings, and they give different functions to the melody notes. You could ask 5 people to put chords to a piece of 16 bars, and they would likely be different!
A tip for you out there: If you're writing chords to your melody, don't be afraid to change notes in the melody if it fits better with the chords. You could, for instance, Take this melody loop in the video. The first 3 times I play:
Am / / / | G9 / / / | C / / / | D / F G
Last time I play:
Em7 / A / | Bb Ebmaj7 E7 / | Cmaj7 / Dm7 / | E7 / / / /
Then finish on an A.
From the Dm I sharpen the g note as to fit over the E7 and A.
The "|" Marks the start of a new bar and each "/" and chord is a quarter note.
