How to Hear the Differences Between These 4 Chords For Beginners On Piano and information related to this topic.
Welcome students, today we are talking about the differences between 4 main types of chords. These chords include major, minor, diminished, and augmented triads. Even for beginners, it is important to be able to hear the difference between these basic chords. By the end of this tutorial, you should have a pretty good idea on how to determine which chord is being played based solely on its sound. Keep in mind that during this lesson I may use the terms triads and chords interchangeably. This is because a triad is a type of chord with three notes.

Wow I do not feel so bad, other people are having problems hearing the difference between the diminished and augmented is really difficult for me
Major – 1:01
Minor – 3:31
Diminished – 7:07
Augmented – 12:14
Very helpful video! Thank you so much!
Im a guitar player but this helped me more than you could imagine. Appreciate it buddy!
well explained. I can totally feel the differences.
Kindly make a video differentiating diminished and augmented triads or chords, please? I know I'm not the only one struggling with these two. Thank you!
you're a life saver, geez thank you
I NEVER GOT THAT HAPPY-SAD THING I can't hear the A chord changing to A minor in FOR YOUR LOVE(YARDBIRDS)
The problem is you can't recognise chords individually since they sound different in the middle of an actual chord progression. They won't have the sad or happy feel during a progression, they will have a certain feeling due to the progression itself.
Thanks! This really helps!
Actually helped me immensely, thanks
I really enjoyed your video!! I found it very helpful, even though i knew how to recognise them and i needed some material to do revision, i really found it very helpful and i find myself to wants more! really good job!
For beginners I would start with intervals or scale degrees on a melody. I think "happy" or "sad" chords isn't a useful method in practice. If anyone has interest on practice melodic dictation, there are a channel I found out recently: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoAlmubJ_U-ILTQTNy1r7iA/videos
7:02 Diminished
12:05 Augmented
Big help man, bless you 😀
I struggle with differentiating augmented and deminished, I always mix them up
Are there audio dropouts all through this? I couldn't make it to the end.
Best explanation
Thank you for making this video. It's very helpful.
I can't for the life of me hear the difference between "mysterious vs darker" sound. But I just found the secret to hearing the difference. I can hear single notes just fine but not in a chord because my brain just meshes them together to one sound. However I am able to hear the lowest note and the highest note in the chord if I focus really hard. Since I know a dimished chord is 3-3 (3 half steps from the first note and 3 half steps from the second note) and an augmented chord is 3-4, I can just sing the half steps up and find out if the highest note is 3 or 4 half steps from the middle. (only works if u can sing in tune haha)
this works so far with triads but i might run into problems when I start trying to hear inversions
This is a perfect explanation. Thank you very much!
why are you playing the augmented chords in minor? (you played a D augmented chord as D F G#, for example)
Thank you for the video, it helped me a lot
What you said was totally true?when i hear for too long, i will mix up these chords
this was helpful but when he does aug and dim he slams the keyboard and lowkey it’s really obvious
to me minor chords sound dark and mysterious, not sad, but more adventurous
To me augmented sounds very spacious and nebulous/loose dreamy
It may be easier for beginners who may be struggling to compare the 4 chords in the same key in the beginning. The different keys convey different subtle shades of emotion. This is what I have observed during this lesson
Some majors sound brighter than others.
14:08 – I always think of the Aug chord as 'soaring' or 'uplifting', especially when following its parallel major. Think of the ending of "Let There be Peace on Earth" (@ 01:23 ) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYWe4nBPknI
Also the refrain from "Oh, Canada" (@ 1:03) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRPGPAnPNa8
I am so bad at this
thank you so much – just a thought – if you could take a few seconds at the end of each "short" chord lesson to play/demonstrate/review what you talked about before moving on that would be amazing. keep up the great work and thank you!
Hello guys how about the song in the beginning ? I know i heard it before but i cant remember the title. Plz
i <3 your vids!
Sir you forgot dominant 7th chord
Nice, but chords played on the lower and higher part of the piano cannot be ignored! How do we recognize them?
Great lesson. Thank you.
Augmented: totally discordant.
Isn't diminished the cord played when the villain appears in a silent film music track.
Are you playing these in root position or are you including 1st and 2nd inversions?
