Since I posted my cover of the Sara Bareilles song “Bottle It Up” a few weeks ago, I’ve been getting a lot of messages and comments asking for sheet music.
I play by ear, so I don’t have them… I figured the next best thing would be a tutorial to teach you how I played my version of the song.

If you do learn this song by watching this video, please post a video response either to this video or my original version (see link above) so I can see how it came out!

THANKS!!
Sarah

  1. That was a great tutorial, but WHAT THE HELL! The ending?!? How am I supposed to do that? I'm sorry, but I'm not a professional piano player!

  2. I loved this tutorial! I know you posted this years ago, but I would really REALLY appreciate it if you could actually post another video with you singing along with this version of bottled up!
It would be really helpful! Thank you!
    Ally

  3. If you can figure this out by ear, you are a genius! Most of the time (if not all) the only way I can figure out a piece is if the music is right in my face. Amazing!

  4. Thanks so much for posting this. I just decided to learn to play piano and this is the first song I am attempting. I was skeptical of trying to learn anything on YouTube like this, and also thought learning a song like this was probably too ambitious to start – but you do a great job explaining it step by step and I can (sort of) play it already. So thanks! 🙂

  6. this tutorial is very useful and effective. i learned it in less than an hour 🙂 THANK YOU SO MUCH! 🙂

my version is mixed with the bridge i learned from the tutorial of our fellow YouTube user brycelane, and for the intro, i listened to Sara Bareilles' live version. so it's sort of like a hybrid of the three products :)) i'll post a video response soon, when i have a decent camera 🙂
i really hope you could check out my live cover of Bottle It Up sometime (though i didn't play the piano). 🙂

  7. i can get separate notes as i hear them but not the whole chords by ear- u r amazing! thanks for uploading this and u have beautiful voice (when u start the verses) as well!

  8. Hard to sound unprofessional when I never claimed to be a professional pianist in the first place.
Before you start giving condescending pointers to fellow YouTubers, you might want to read up on your facts as well. Like I said in this video (and all others), I play by ear; I don't know "modern notation" for chords. I'm just trying to be a help for others who want to learn the song, but don't read music well (like myself).
    Thanks for watching, though.

  9. A lot of people seem to like this video, But I just wanted to give you one pointer: learn the modern notation for your chords. You said that the first chord was an A chord, but It was an A Minor Chord. Very misleading. The "weird Aflat B D with an E on the bottom" is an E dominant 7 chord. Refer to it as a G sharp, not an A flat. It makes you sound very unprofessional if you don't even know what you're teaching.

  10. hi wow, firstly WOW! u voice is actually lush from 3:33 lol just sounds well nice :P. thanks for the how too i heard this song at work to day and came home and SEARCHED for it. and then decided why not learn it. thanks agen sarah!

  11. I actually just play random notes to fill in the empty space. No definite notes… I just play what feels right at the time. That sorta comes with practice and playing around. Try it! 🙂

  12. Sorry for the late reply. The outro is played at the end of the song as she's singing, "You're only gonna get get what you give away…." 🙂

  13. this is really great & one of the best piano tutorials on youtube. ive never learnt how to play the piano and i love to sing so this kinda thing is perfect for me, but like others im finding it hard to get the extra notes what aree they? also how do you know what cords fit in where and also when your describing the 'outro' you dont say the notes like you say in the rest of the tutorial and they'd been really helpful for that bit.erm so yeah id be really greatful if u could reply to this thnks (:

  14. You're sooo nice! 🙂 For sure. Thank you for your tutoria. In the future at the end you should play it through slowly so we can put it all together while we're learning it together. 🙂 Thanks though it was great. I'll figure it out.

  15. hey Sara thanks for the video!! the Chord that u dont know the name its a E7 u are doing the e on the bass line and the rest of the chord with the right hand, it sounds weird cause that second part of the chord its dim so thats why =) sorry about my english, im from Colombia (south america) and my english is not the best i hope u get me!!! i got the song already but im very shy so i dont think i can post a video!! thanks though!! tace care and keep bringin tutorials u are very good at it!!
