There are several basic piano techniques that you can use to make your right hand chords sound smoother and more elegant. In this piano tutorial I introduce three ways of avoiding the choppy right hand sound that is common among a lot of beginning pianists.
Start by looking at the chords you’re playing and the sequence in which you’re playing them on the piano keyboard. Are you using the right inversions? As a beginner, it’s common to play all of the chords in the root position, but this can lead to a lack of smoothness. Try using chord inversions which have notes in common with the next chord in the sequence.
It’s also important to choose sensible fingering. A lot of ‘teach yourself’ piano books tend to instruct you to use your thumb, third, and fifth fingers, but this isn’t always the best choice. Make the transitions from chord-to-chord easier for yourself by using fingers that are already ‘free’ rather than moving your whole hand for each new chord.
This should help your piano playing – both improvisation and playing from sheet music – flow much more easily, and also gives you the ability to ‘swing’ between chords by holding down just one of the notes of the chord. This is a great way of ‘faking’ smoothness, which listeners generally won’t notice.
You can also make use of your piano’s sustain pedal – but remember to do this sensibly! Try not to overuse the sustain pedal, as this will create a nasty, messy sound. Pedalling on each chord should give the desired effect.
The most important thing to remember is that this all comes down to practice. Try incorporating these techniques into your playing, and before long you should find that your right hand chords sound far smoother.

3. For 3, a guide: F C G = Snowmen (All 3 W); F# = Chocolate (All 3 B); D A E = Burger ( W B W); Db Ab Eb = Oreo ( B W B); B = WBB; Bb = BWW
Movements for 1 5 6 4 1
1. 1 3 5
2. 1 moves back H; 3 moves back W; & 5 remains
3. 1 moves forward H; 3 moves forward W; 5 moves forward W
4. 1 remains; 3 moves forward H; 5 remains
5. 1 remains; 3 moves back H; 5 moves back W
Total movements:
1. Finger 1 moves between notes 1 (base) and 7 (back H)
2. Finger 5 moves between notes 5 (fifth) and 6 (forward W)
3. Finger 3 moves between notes 3 (base) 2 (back W) 4 (forward H)
From the Chord 1, the fingers move half or whole step, and one does not have to remember the keys of the Scale through special effort; the same pattern repeats for 1 5 6 4 1 across all major scales

Hi Bill, I am wondering if it's best to play the melodies on the right hand and the chords on the left hand. Which one is better? I've seen most people play the chords on the right hand while they play the melodies on the left hand and this has got me confused. I have this tendency for writting my melodies on the right and then I add the chords on the left hand. Am I doing it all wrong?

I've recently began taking lessons as an adult, from a lady who teaches chords….the last lesson has me frustrated as she told me to use chords for my right hand as well, your video is great, its helped me now that I am home and not sitting with the teacher….I have a simple song with the right hand playing the notes: A, F, C G and a b flat….I haven't yet gotten to put them together smoothly, I was doing exactly what you first showed, up and down the keyboard, choppily, can you show me how to use the chords above so I can copy?? thank you very much

Hi Bill, I am learning blues from your video and I have one question: If I play in C i use C blues scale right? But when I jump to IV degree F i change scale to F or stick with C?
Bill. Thank you so much for all your videos. I had 4 years of piano lessons but quit when I got to middle school. Since then I have become a block chord bore on the piano. I've viewed TONS of tutorials for piano on you tube and NONE of them helped me become a better piano player, You are by far the best teacher online teacher IMHO. One of many examples is your video "How to play smooth right hand chords" in 8 min I finally learned a simple teq for the Sus. Pedal. And having grown up with an organ and a piano I really liked the teq of holding the right hand 5 finger position has you change chords to smooth things out. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate all the time and effort you've put in to these videos..
