I just wish you explained why the ii is half diminished in that example around 12:45 when the formula is ii diminished generally.
This was a great help. I'm in the process of working out song in Em. I have the beginning worked out which I'm pleased with. It's the second part that I'm stuck on. I want it to have a happier tone than the beginning. I finally have a good understanding of Modes so might look at lydian. I'm basically looking at everything in the key of G Major.
For 25 years I wondered about the G major/ E minor scale as an example. I was spending too much time on the G chord and that’s why it sounded so happy. Finally got it.

What a pile of crap. People, if you need to watch videos like this to write songs then you'll never write songs, at least not anything worth listening to. Here's what I recommend: listen to music; loads of it. Listen to music you like; listen to music you don't like; listen to old music; listen to really old music; listen to stuff you've never heard before; listen to everything; keep on listening. Get your guitar. Play any chord; play anything. Move about any string or fret or combination of strings. Dwell on the things that move you; that stir the same feelings as any of the best of all that music you listened to. That's it. That's how all the greatest music was written; that's how all the greatest songs were written. Go for it!

Just use major keys, every major has a relative minor.
If you want to use the minor scale, you have to offset the major one on the fretboard.
You have to learn the intervals anyway.
Distinguishing between minor and major keys leads to a dangerous area and you will write the same music all the time.
You can convert the major chords to suspended, 7s and augmented and use your ears what's sounds right to you.
You can also use minor7 chords to replace minors. (nice for verses)
Moreover, you can write literally anything in C major and if you have finished put into different key using a capo then convert your chords to inversions.
Also don't use more than one major (inkey) chord in a sad song because it sounds pretty psycho.
From my experience maj7 chords sound pretty jazzy (or noisy) and I would avoid it. Dim chords sound pretty cool before major chords.
My brain can barely process major key playing. There’s a connection to minor key playing that actually kinda just flows out of me. Particularly improvisational playing. I can solo, jam, improvise and have fun in minor. In major I’m basically just a strummer. When trying to even just practice major key playing, it’ll often somehow evolve into minor playing and whatever I’m doing just becomes a minor key.

I don’t like how you say that these are the chords you are allowed to use, music is a broad spectrum where there are virtually no rules. This is a really bad way of teaching new musicians
