“Lose Yourself” is the theme song from Eminem’s semi-biographical movie 8 Mile. It’s considered one of Eminem’s best songs—if not his best song—and is also his biggest hit to date.

Written between breaks on the set of 8 Mile, engineer Steven King claimed all three verses were rapped “in one take”—but Eminem has since shed doubt on that claim. The beat was older than the song though—Em actually recorded a completely different version of the song over the beat. The demo was eventually released in 2014, dubbed “Original Demo Version,” as part of the SHADY XV compilation album—but that version was more like a dance song.

“Lose Yourself” reached #1 in 20 countries – Eminem’s first in the US, holding the top position for 12 weeks, making it become the third-longest chart topper from a movie soundtrack (behind “I Will Always Love You” and “End Of The Road”). It became the first rap song to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song, won two Grammys (Best Male Rap Solo Performance & Best Rap Song), and has since been certified Diamond (10x Multi-Platinum) in the United States.

The song was used in an iconic Apple iPod commercial and an instrumental version was used in a Chrysler Super Bowl ad that featured Em. It was also performed at the 2020 Academy Awards.
