มหัศจรรย์ธรรมชาติ ไม้กลายเปันหิน Petrified wood
ไม้กลายเป็นหิน (อังกฤษ: petrified wood) คือซากดึกดำบรรพ์ของพืชประเภทหนึ่ง เกิดขึ้นจากท่อนไม้ถูกฝังกลบอยู่ใต้ผิวดินในสภาพที่ขาดออกซิเจนทำให้เนื้อไม้ไม่เน่าเปื่อย และถูกฝังแช่อยู่ในสารละลายซิลิก้าที่มีความเข้มข้นสูงเพียงพอ ในสภาพแวดล้อมที่ท่อนไม้และสารละลายซิลิกาได้สัมผัสกับออกซิเจนเป็นบางช่วงเวลาทำให้สารละลายซิลิกาตกตะกอนในรูปของซิลิกาเจล สะสมตัวแทนที่โมเลกุลของเนื้อไม้ (replacement) จนทำให้ท่อนไม้ที่เป็นเนื้อสารอินทรีย์เปลี่ยนไปเป็นเนื้อหินซิลิกาแต่ยังคงรักษาโครงสร้างเนื้อไม้ดั้งเดิมเอาไว้
ด้วยระยะเวลานับเป็นหมื่นเป็นแสนปีหรือมากกว่านี้ ไม้กลายเป็นหินจะค่อยๆสูญเสียน้ำทีละน้อยและค่อยๆพัฒนาเป็นโอปอลที่มีสีสันสวยงามได้ ทั้งนี้ขึ้นอยู่กับมลทินซึ่งเป็นแร่ธาตุที่ปะปนอยู่ในเนื้อของซิลิกาออกไซด์ ซึ่งแร่ธาตุต่างๆให้สีสันต่างๆกันไป เช่น
คาร์บอน ให้ สีดำ
โคบอลต์ ให้ สีเขียว/น้ำเงิน
โครเมียม ให้ สีเขียว/น้ำเงิน
ทองแดง ให้ สีเขียว/น้ำเงิน
เหล็กออกไซด์ ให้ สีแดง/น้ำตาล/เหลือง
แมงกานีส ให้ สีชมพู/ส้ม
แมงกานีสออกไซด์ ให้ สีดำ/เหลือง

Petrified wood (from the Greek root petro meaning \”rock\” or \”stone\”; literally \”wood turned into stone\”) is the name given to a special type of fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation. It is the result of a tree or treelike plants having completely transitioned to stone by the process of permineralization. All the organic materials have been replaced with minerals (mostly a silicate, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the stem tissue. Unlike other types of fossils which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a threedimensional representation of the original organic material. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment or volcanic ash and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen which inhibits aerobic decomposition. Mineralladen water flowing through the covering material deposits minerals in the plant’s cells; as the plant’s lignin and cellulose decay, a stone mold forms in its place. The organic matter needs to become petrified before it decomposes completely.[1] A forest where such material has petrified becomes known as a petrified forest.
