IEC (Internationnal Electrotechique Commission) คือ คณะกรรมมาธิการระหว่างประเทศว่าด้วยมาตรฐานสาขาอิเล็คทรอเทคนิค เป็นองค์กรอิสระที่ร่วมมือกันจัดตั้งเพื่อกำหนดมาตรฐานด้านไฟฟ้าและอิเล็คทรอนิค และทำการจัดทำแบบการประเมินเพื่อการรับรองคุณภาพ จัดตั้งขึ้นในปี พศ. 2449

มาตรฐาน IEC ได้รับความนิยมมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ตามแนวโน้มความเป็นสากลของโลก และตามโลกาภิวัฒน์ โดยขณะนี้ IEC มีประเทศสมาชิกเกือบทุกประเทศในโลก

หลายประเทศได้นำมาตรฐาน IEC ไปประยุกต์ใช้ในประเทศของตน ซึ่งอาจจะเป็นประยุกต์ใช้แบบเต็มรูปแบบ หรือประยุกต์ใช้บางส่วน แล้วแต่ความเหมาะสมของแต่ละประเทศ

ในแต่ละประเทศจะมีกรรมการแห่งชาติ 1 ชุด โดยในประเทศไทย กรรมธิการที่เข้าร่วมกับ IEC คือ สมอ. (TISI) หรือ สำนักงานมาตรฐานผลิตภัณฑ์อุตสาหกรรมนั่นเอง โดยเข้าร่วมตั้งแต่ปี พศ.2534 ในประเภท full member คือ มีสิทธิเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมต่างได้อย่างเต็มที่และสามารถเข้าร่วมกำหนดมาตรฐานได้

ข้อดีของการมีมาตรฐานร่วมกันคือ จะทำให้การออกแบบ การผลิต การใช้งานอุปกรณ์ไฟฟ้าและอิเลคทรอนิคส์ไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน ซึ่งจะช่วยอำนวยความสะดวกในทางการค้า และขจัดการกีดกันทางการค้าที่มาในรูปแบบของข้อกำหนดมาตรฐานต่างๆ
