On their 30th Anniversary the church continue to redefine what it is to be a band, evolving without compromise into one of the world’s most acknowledged rock groups. Guiding the band though the ’80s and ’90s with a combination of chemistry, talent and a desire for excellence, their unique and distinctive guitar sounds and thought-provoking lyrics have succeeded in inspiring both the audience and the critics’ imagination the world over. In recent years the band have continued on their creative trajectory and with their induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame, they have been able to reflect on their huge body of work as they continue to be prolific and pursue their artistic aspirations both live and in the studio.

From the debut album Of Skins and Heart (including their first hit The Unguarded Moment) to the artistically and commercially successful Starfish, charting high in both Australia and the USA, (featuring the ubiquitous Under The Milky Way and guitar driven Reptile), through to 2009′s lush, organic masterpiece Untitled #23, lead vocalist and bassist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Tim Powles (now an active member of the band for 17 years), have continued as the church through three whole decades to pleasure their fans with a unerring sense of space, melody, beat driven prose and sonic charm.

Rolling Stone Australia gave their last album Untitled #23 an unprecedented 5 star review — “a stunningly ambitious album of shimmering rock”. In the USA Rolling Stone commented, “the church have truly reaffirmed themselves as one of the world’s leading melodic art-rock bands, regarded by critics as “a powerful, progressive force in rock music”, playing “the most ethereal sounds this side of paradise” and have remained one of the world’s most innovative and enigmatic groups justifying praises from the press including “Best guitar band on Earth”, “Sonic perfection”, “Sounds that caress the senses”. “A masterpiece of stealth”.

  1. Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty,
Sound of their breath fades with the light
I think about the loveless fascination,
    Under the milky way tonight.

Lower the curtain down in Memphis,
Lower the curtain down all right
I got no time for private consultation,
    Under the milky way tonight.

Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find.

    And its something quite peculiar,
    Something thats shimmering and white
Leads you here despite your destination,
    Under the milky way tonight

Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find.

    Under the milky way tonight…

  2. I might get a lot of flack over this comment but…Is he not capable of singing a line without running out of breath? Almost every line is chopped up, like he physically can't pull it off. To me, there aren't long vocal segments to where this should be remotely an issue. I came here looking for a good live/acoustic version, but it's too hacked up to enjoy. I had to turn it off because I don't want this song ruined for me. I know singers get bored after the years and play with their lyrical styles on onld songs, but this isn't doing any favors. I'll take it as I remember it, thank you. I came here for enjoyment, but couldn't stand the lyrical changes. The song was magical from day 1. And If you can't pull this EASY number off, just pack it up. I know singers get old, but what is this rubbish? Sing it right or go home.

  3. No mames, esta rola siempre me ha gustado. La escuché de niño y ahora de huevudo me hizo llorar. De los grupos escoseses son Simple Minds y The Church. Ya independicense de Gran Bretaña. Saludos desde México.

  4. Oh when this record came out…. blown away!
Got to see them live at a small gig at the University of Chicago. Band left stage with a guitar feeding back center stage. Epic night

  5. To me this song is about sending your troubles away and let them fade and staring out into space into those beautiful stars ⭐️

The feeling of letting go never felt so good in my life. Such a magical song. The Church rocks. 😎👌

  6. Don't get me wrong, Elton still has a great voice but avoids the high Bennie and the Jets falsetto notes as well as Crocodile Rock. He sings them an octave lower.

  7. he gets a bit annoyed with sound men in smaller clubs while doing this song. The club I saw him at had the shitiest monitor system and it is challenging to sing in a lower register while you maintain whispy sultry effect. It can be taxing on the vocal cords and hard to hear yourself, avoiding singing off key. It is like men singing falsetto. It may be just upper register head voice but if you don't attenuate and get enough breathe balance accross your vocal cords can mess your throat up. That is what happened to Elton's voice and why he was advise to avoid falsetto during his performances.

  8. This Main dude might think w/ turms that has the Lord, or Jesus wants people to do ( WHAT-EVER) that the Truely valued man Up-above practicaly sponsers any one + more-over-all people , well for they to follow, "hound", theres hard knocks or maybe more-so, in this caser
