What is a circle chord? Chords of circles are pretty neat, when we have a pair of congruent chords there are a lot of interesting properties that arise. We go over what chords of circles are as well as some interesting properties they have. Additionally, we touch on how to find the length of a chord, without spoiling the solution!

A circle chord is a line segment whose endpoints both lie on a particular circle. A chord passing through the center of a circle is a diameter of the circle, and is the longest possible chord in the circle.

In the video lesson I mention statements that are “true both ways” or “true in both directions”. I wanted to expound on that to be more specific here in the description. A conditional statement is a statement of the form “If P, then Q”. If the converse of that statement is also true: “If Q, then P”, then the statement is called “biconditional”. All of the properties we present in the lesson are biconditional statements. So not only can we conclude this or that when we have congruent chords, but when we have this or that we can conclude the involved chords are congruent.

The solution to the challenge exercise at the end of the video is to use sin(25 degrees) (25 degrees is half the measure of theta) to calculate the ratio of half the chord length to the radius length. Then, multiplying sin(25 degrees) by 6 and by 2 to get the length of the whole chord gives an answer of about 5 cm.
