  1. First song that uses the Axis of Awesome Chord Progression is Canon in D as the Axis of Awesome 4 Chords are the first 4 Chords of Pachelbel’s Canon

Another early one is Beethoven’s 30th Piano Sennota and Streets of London, Stand By Me, The First Noel and the Soviet National Anthem are all early examples of it being used

  2. As others have said, Tool is metallish and well worth analysing.
    [ Here's an example of someone else's analysis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScRG40_7zb0 ]
I'd also really like to see your take on Captain Beefheart. In 1969 a schoolfriend played me Trout Mask Replica and asked what I thought of it. I replied "I really like it, and don't know why." Still really like it, with a better idea of why (he invites you into his head, with lots of polyrhythms), but many people can't stand it!

  3. Simple is best to start, Neil Young's "Ragged Glory" is certainly unapologetic Rock that more or less gave birth to Grunge, I would love your opinion. I am 68 and a lifelong Beatles fan. I love your takes on theory.

  4. Extreme is my favorite rock band. Almost all of their songs are interesting harmonicly and melodicly. For example, the song Rest in Peace has a very interesting movement harmony and melody, some of which I still can't understand or analyze. It would be great if you please analyze some of Extreme's songs. Their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums are fantastic. In addition, their rhythmic work is also outstanding.

  5. 8:20 there is actually quite a lot ! Here are examples of songs in 3/4 or 6/8 (i'm not really good at distinguishing the two) :

Tyler, the Creator – Garden shed
    Kanye West – Starship
Kanye West – Drunk and hot girls
    Eminem – Untitled
Jay Z & Kanye West – Lift off
Drake & Future – Plastic bag
    Jay-z – My first song
    Nas – Heaven

And the oddest time signature of all rap songs i've ever heard : Underground by Eminem IN FUCKING 5/8 LIKE WTF

  6. Love your videos David! As someone who listens to all styles and genres of music, I feel like if you want to be introduced to metal music, I would start with the band Between The Buried And Me and their album Colors. Very jazz influenced, odd time signatures, beautiful melodies, and some very heavy riffs! It’s also an homage to Dark Side of the Moon! Cheers my dude!

  7. You should listen to Between the Buried and Me’s Album “Colors” it would also be interesting if you analysed it. They have a lot to offer. Keep up the videos, they’re awesome.

  8. Could you explain how to we might be able to hear the Blues – in Jazz and Funk ? Many thanks! You're a great teacher. Your scripts are Succinct without unnecessary tangents

  9. Metal recommendations: Iron Maiden's Rime of the Ancient Mariner or Wasted Years, Judas Priest's The Sentinel or Tyrant, Rush's 2112 or Tom Sawyer (Tom Sawyer is more hard rock, not metal but it's still a great song). Any chance of analyzing any progressive rock songs? Bands like Rush and Yes do quite a bit of time signature changes and have a large catalogue of songs. 🙂 I was never a good musician but I love music of all genres and am hooked on your channel!

  10. I think you’re an awesome person, young man! You make great sense to me. Your analysis is spot on and important. How much do you want in dollars to analyze some unreleased songs for me? I am eager to learn your thoughts. Hopefully, you’ll respond.

  11. I think a band you may be able to get into is Polyphia,I think they are insane in how they merge instrumental jazz, progressive metal/art rock together and create something with a sophisticated sound whilst being classed as metal. If you do check them out,I'm genuinely intruiged what your thoughts are!Songs I'd recommend are GOAT,40 oz and O.D

  12. Eminem has got a few songs with odd signatures. a few examples off the top of my head are Wont Back Down which is in 6/8 and Underground which switches between 5/4 and 4/4

  13. Hey David, been on a binge of your vids. Gonna throw out a couple of easy access "metal" bands to try to get you into the genre. I'm sure they've already been said but hopefully another voice gets you to listen lol

Iron Maiden: Fast and melodic with lots of tempo changes and key changes. Constant energy. Specific songs to check out would be Flight of Icarus, The Trooper, and Hallowed Be Thy Name

Megadeth: progenitors of Thrash metal. Politically charged and wear it on their sleeves. The album's that feature Marty Friedman on lead guitar have a lot of technicality to the playing, as he was more of a neo-classical guitar player before joining. Check out Peace Sells, Hanger 18, Holy Wars, and In My Darkest Hour

Ozzy Osbourne: The godfather of metal itself, but his solo stuff had a crazy stretch of amazing music. The first two albums (Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman) feature classically trained Guitarist Randy Rhoads, who's playing shows the transition from classical to metal in a way never seen before. The following albums featuring Jake E Lee and Zak Wylde are more hit or miss, but also have some really good tracks. Best intro songs are Mr. Crowley, Diary of a Madman, Over the Mountain, and Crazy Train.

Hopefully you check those out and enjoy them.

PS, best of luck with the book! I'll def check it out when it's released

  14. Story 2 by clipping. switches time signatures about 20 times (hyperbole). It's probably one of the best rap songs of all time. To the point that I'd argue it's almost too superstitious to be considered "just a rap song". It's a masterpiece of a song. They've experimented with time signatures before and later, though.

  15. MF Doom has some interesting use of samples that are probably not in 4/4. Not too versed in music theory so I'm not sure if that is the case but you should check him out
